Redesigning the Shields Library
Real-world Renovations
In my Advanced Interior Architecture Class, we had the exciting opportunity to assist Peter J. Shield’s Library staff in renovating the first-floor lobby, which they will be actually reconstructing in the future.
But before anything else, I conducted research and asked questions about the role of libraries, how they shape public interaction, the current uses of library spaces, the desired uses of the space, and potential new uses that I could suggest to the staff.
This was a quarter-long project that we then pitched to the library revision committee and received feedback based on their observations and needs as library staff.
Final Consolidated Poster
After all groups presented their ideas to the library staff, I was a part of a group effort to consolidate the best aspects of each group’s design. I worked directly on the floor plan and assisted with rendering Sections.
Small Group Poster
We were separated into five different groups to create a unique layout for the library. I conducted research and helped producee concept designs such as Parti diagrams. Our group’s final design involved a large projector screen in the middle of the room to act as a hub of conversation and lectures. We also had an outdoor cafe, a workshop area directly across the Projector space by the entrance, a conference room that entered into the Courtyard space, and private offices in the back. I primarily worked on renderings which I modeled first in Rhino and then rendered in Twinmotion.
